Meet Fritz Holznagel
An Emmy winner and Jeopardy! champ, Fritz Holznagel has been a writer for 30+ years.
He’s a longtime writer for Google and other high-tech companies, quizmaster for The Conversation, and author of the popular writing guide 8 Letters or Less.
8 Letters or Less shares the three secrets to great writing that Fritz has learned in his long career. Fritz’s other books include The Ultimate Droodles Compendium, a fond look back at the work of misplaced humorist Roger Price, and Secrets of the Buzzer, called the “sacred text” of Jeopardy! buzzing.
Fritz won the Emmy ages ago as a writer of the 1992 CBS animated special A Claymation Easter. Since 2022, he has written a funny weekly quiz for the global news group The Conversation.
Fritz made his first appearance on the TV game show Jeopardy! in 1994 and returned for the show’s Tournament of Champions in 1995, where he defeated 14 other champs to win the tourney and the top prize of $100,000. He later returned to the Jeopardy! stage to represent the U.S. in the Jeopardy! Olympic Tournament, and to take part in the 2005 Ultimate Tournament of Champions and the 2014 Battle of the Decades.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Willamette University, Fritz lives near Boston with his wife, Julie, and a yard full of wild rabbits.
